Dancing Through Library Science

Posts from a 23-year-old MLIS student with a BA in cinema and a deep love of all things nerd. I work in two libraries - one public, one academic - and share a home with two cats, Heather and Floyd. Be prepared to see geekery and food posts.

  • Field has mulled selling artifacts

When the Field Museum sold more than 30 works of 19th-century Western art for millions of dollars in 2004, it eased controversy by announcing plans to spend the proceeds on new artifacts and by holding on to four of the best paintings from the collection.

But within seven years, the museum had sold off the four remaining works by famed artist George Catlin and used some of the money to create a fund whose earnings would go toward certain staff salaries.

Since then, records show, some scientists and executives at the Field have considered selling other treasures.

  • Everything You Need to Know About Bitcoin

You may be hearing a lot of chatter about Bitcoin lately and find yourself wondering what exactly it is, does, and means. We at PCMag have been having the exact same internal dialogue, so after combing the farthest corners of the Internet to find out more, we had a conversation with ourselves about what we discovered.

Short titles for bills and acts in the US Congress have undergone a revolution in recent decades. What used to be an accurate informational component for legislation has become an untamable political marketing lion. Descriptive short titles such as the 1913 Federal Reserve Act, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and theElementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 have given way to names such as the USA PATRIOT Act, the No Child Left Behind Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. While the US Congress is the largest peddler of this misinformation, it is certainly not alone. This politically neutral site draws attention to bill naming around the world and seeks to inform citizens, journalists, academics and students on this practice.

  • New OCLC registry service shines a spotlight on libraries

“The advantage of this program is that libraries can manage essential information about their local services in one central registry. Their information then becomes available in WorldCat.org and is fed into many OCLC partner websites and services,” said Chip Nilges, Vice President, OCLC Business Development. Library information that is entered into the OCLC Library Spotlight program will be syndicated into a variety of online environments and websites to more easily connect information seekers back to libraries.
